floating bridge

Buoyant road surface

A floating bridge is a bridge supported by pontoons or other buoyant structures rather than fixed piers anchored to the bottom.

These bridges are practical where water is too deep or the bottom too soft for conventional supports: The floating bridge across Lake Washington handles heavy commuter traffic.

The term also applies to a temporary military pontoon bridge for crossing rivers during operations.
