ice road
Winter lake crossing
An ice road is a temporary winter road constructed over frozen lakes, rivers, or sea ice, allowing vehicles to cross water or swampy terrain that would be impassable in warmer months.
Ice roads serve remote communities and industrial sites in northern Canada, Alaska, and Russia: Truckers haul supplies up the ice road before spring thaw.
The surface must freeze thick enough to bear heavy loads, making the driving season brief and the work dangerous.
