pontoon bridge
Buoyant water span
A pontoon bridge is a temporary bridge supported by floating platforms—pontoons—rather than fixed foundations.
Military engineers construct them to cross rivers quickly when permanent bridges are destroyed or unavailable.
The pontoons may be boats, inflatable rafts, or hollow metal structures: Troops crossed the river on a hastily assembled pontoon bridge.
