cantonment

Troops' permanent station

A cantonment is a military camp or quarters, especially a permanent or semi-permanent installation where troops are stationed.

The term appears most often in South Asian contexts, where British colonial cantonments became distinct districts of cities—areas originally built to house military personnel that often evolved into administrative centers: the Rawalpindi cantonment, Delhi Cantonment.
