hill station

Cool altitude town

A hill station is a town in the mountains of South Asia, typically established during British colonial rule as a retreat from the summer heat of the lowlands.

Colonial administrators and their families would relocate to these cooler elevations for months at a time.

Shimla, Darjeeling, and Ooty are well-known examples.

The term remains current in India and neighboring countries: We're spending August at a hill station in the Himalayas.
