viceroys
Monarchs' regional deputies
Viceroys are rulers who govern a territory as representatives of a sovereign.
The Spanish viceroys of colonial America wielded enormous power on behalf of distant monarchs.
The term combines "vice" (in place of) with "roy" (king)—a viceroy rules in the king's stead.
A viceroy is also a butterfly resembling the monarch, a smaller mimic of its poisonous model.
