demilitarized zone
Weapons-prohibited border region
A demilitarized zone is a buffer area between hostile territories where military forces and weapons are prohibited.
The term often refers specifically to the strip dividing North and South Korea: Tensions rose along the DMZ.
Any region where opposing sides agree to withdraw troops may be called a demilitarized zone.
