sepoy
Indian colonial soldier
A sepoy was an Indian soldier serving under European, especially British, command during the colonial period.
The term is most associated with the armies of the British East India Company and later the British Indian Army.
The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, also called the Indian Rebellion, marked a turning point in British rule.
The word comes from a Persian term for soldier.
