Daal, also spelled dal or dhal, is a staple of South Asian cuisine consisting of dried legumes—typically lentils, split peas, or beans—cooked until soft, often with spices like turmeric, cumin, and coriander.
The word refers both to the raw ingredient and the finished dish, which is usually served as a thick, soupy accompaniment to rice or flatbread.
