interposition
Insertion among others
Interposition is the act of placing something between other things, or the state of being so placed.
A person who interposes in a dispute inserts themselves between the parties: Her timely interposition prevented a fight.
In American history, interposition was a doctrine claiming states could block federal laws they deemed unconstitutional—a theory largely discredited after the Civil War.
