trammel

Freedom's binding obstacle

A trammel is something that restricts or impedes movement or freedom—chains, shackles, or figurative constraints: the trammels of convention, free from the trammels of bureaucracy.

The verb means to restrict or entangle: trammeled by outdated regulations.

Historically, a trammel was also a fishing net or a device for drawing ellipses, but these uses are now rare.

The word appears most often in its negative form: untrammeled freedom, untrammeled wilderness.
