brake shoes

Wheel-slowing curved pads

Brake shoes are curved metal plates lined with friction material that press outward against a drum to slow or stop a wheel.

Found in drum brakes on older vehicles and some modern rear brakes, they work by expanding against the drum's inner surface when the brake pedal is pressed: The mechanic replaced the worn brake shoes.
