actuation

Making it go

Actuation is the process of putting something into action or motion, or the state of being so activated.

The term appears most often in engineering and technical contexts, where an actuator is a device that converts energy into mechanical movement: The valve's actuation is controlled by an electric signal.

More broadly, actuation can mean the motivating or triggering of any action: Her actuation of the emergency protocol saved lives.
