auger

Helical shaft tool

An auger is a tool with a helical shaft for boring holes in wood, ice, or earth.

Hand augers have a T-shaped handle; powered versions drill through frozen lakes for ice fishing or into soil for fence posts.

The spiral design pulls material up and out of the hole as it turns: He used an auger to dig postholes for the new fence.
