Sliding scale instrument
A vernier caliper is a precision measuring instrument with a main scale and a sliding secondary scale (the vernier) that allows readings to fractions of a millimeter or inch.
The jaws grip objects to measure external dimensions, internal dimensions, or depth.
Use a vernier caliper to check the bore diameter.
Though largely replaced by digital calipers, vernier calipers remain valued for their reliability and independence from batteries.
