guesstimate

Ballpark figure, informally

A guesstimate is an estimate based partly on guesswork—a rough calculation where hard data is incomplete or unavailable.

The word blends guess and estimate, capturing that middle ground between wild speculation and precise measurement: I'd guesstimate we need about fifty chairs for the event.

As a verb, to guesstimate is to make such a calculation.
