midshipman
Academy officer candidate
A midshipman is a naval officer in training, ranking below the lowest commissioned officers.
In the United States, midshipmen are students at the Naval Academy; in Britain, the term historically designated young men serving aboard ships as part of their officer training.
The word reflects the traditional position of these trainees in the middle section of a ship.
The midshipmen stood at attention during the inspection.
