intern
Summer office learner
An intern is someone gaining supervised practical experience, typically a student or recent graduate working temporarily in a profession: She's doing a summer intern at the law firm.
Medical interns are newly graduated doctors in their first year of hospital training.
To intern someone is to confine them, especially during wartime: Japanese Americans were interned in camps during World War II.
The confinement sense comes from a different root than the trainee sense.
