broadaxe

Beam-making blade tool

A broadaxe is a large axe with a wide, flat blade, historically used for hewing logs into squared timbers.

Unlike felling axes designed to chop across the grain, broadaxes cut along the length of a log, shaping rough timber into beams for construction.

The blade is typically beveled on one side only, allowing the user to make flat cuts.

The carpenter squared the beam with a broadaxe.
