cleaving

Dividing with force

Cleaving names two opposite actions that share a shape.

To cleave is to split or divide forcefully: The axe cleaved the log in two.

But cleave also means to cling or adhere: She cleaved to her faith through hardship.

The splitting sense dominates modern usage; the clinging sense survives mainly in religious and literary contexts.
