splitting maul
Heavy wedge tool
A splitting maul is a heavy tool for splitting wood along the grain, combining features of an axe and a sledgehammer.
The head typically weighs six to eight pounds with a wedge-shaped blade on one side and a flat striking face on the other.
Unlike a splitting axe, the maul's weight does most of the work: He drove the splitting maul through the oak round in one swing.
