broadaxes
Heavy woodcutting tools
Broadaxes is the plural of broadax, a heavy axe with a wide, flat blade used for hewing timber into squared beams.
Unlike a felling axe, a broadax has one flat side, allowing the user to work close to the wood surface: The carpenter shaped the log with practiced strokes of his broadax.
The tool was essential in traditional timber framing before sawmills became widespread.
