A splitting axe is a tool designed for splitting logs along the grain into firewood.
Unlike a felling axe, which has a thin blade for cutting across wood fibers, a splitting axe has a thick, wedge-shaped head that forces wood apart: He grabbed the splitting axe and worked through the woodpile in an hour.
