crosshead

Engine piston linkage

A crosshead is a heading or subheading that runs across a column of text, breaking up long passages in newspapers or magazines.

In mechanical engineering, a crosshead is a sliding block that connects a piston rod to a connecting rod, converting linear motion while preventing side forces from reaching the piston.

The term also describes a type of screw head with a cross-shaped slot, as in Phillips-head screws.
