triglyph
Three-grooved ornament
A triglyph is an architectural element in the Doric order of classical Greek and Roman buildings, consisting of a rectangular block with three vertical grooves carved into its face.
Triglyphs alternate with plain or decorated panels called metopes along the frieze, the horizontal band above columns.
The grooves are thought to represent the ends of wooden beams from earlier timber construction.
The temple's frieze featured alternating triglyphs and sculptured metopes.
