reeding

Coin edge ridges

Reeding is a decorative pattern of parallel, convex ridges carved or molded into a surface—the opposite of fluting, which uses concave grooves.

It appears on columns, furniture legs, and picture frames.

The milled edge of a coin is also called reeding: The reeding on quarters helps blind people distinguish them from nickels.
