Zika virus

Aedes-transmitted tropical disease

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus that causes mild fever, rash, and joint pain in most people but can cause severe birth defects when pregnant women are infected.

A major outbreak in 2015-2016 linked the virus to microcephaly in newborns, prompting global health emergencies.

Named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, where it was first identified.
