anthrax

Deadly bacterial infection

Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by bacteria, affecting livestock and occasionally humans.

It can be contracted through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation of spores, with the inhaled form being most deadly.

Anthrax gained notoriety as a potential bioweapon, particularly after the 2001 mailings of anthrax-laced letters in the United States: The building was evacuated after a suspicious powder tested positive for anthrax. (Capitalized Anthrax is the heavy metal band.)
