whooping cough
Contagious respiratory infection
Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the respiratory tract, marked by severe coughing fits that end with a distinctive high-pitched "whoop" as the person gasps for air.
The disease is most dangerous in infants.
Vaccination has made it far less common than it once was.
Also called pertussis.
