enterovirus

Intestinal RNA pathogen

An enterovirus is any of a group of viruses that typically enter the body through the gastrointestinal tract and may spread to the nervous system.

The group includes poliovirus, coxsackievirus, and echovirus.

Most enterovirus infections cause mild symptoms or none at all, but some can lead to serious illness: The outbreak was traced to an enterovirus strain affecting young children.
