DEET

Bug spray chemical

DEET is the common name for diethyltoluamide, the active ingredient in most insect repellents.

Applied to skin or clothing, it deters mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects: Make sure to put on some DEET before hiking.

The chemical has been used since the 1940s and remains the standard against which other repellents are measured. (Lowercase deet is slang for "did it.")
