Ebola virus
Deadly African contagion
Ebola virus is a highly lethal pathogen that causes severe hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates.
The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals.
Named after the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was first identified in 1976, outbreaks occur sporadically in Africa with mortality rates sometimes exceeding 50 percent.
The 2014 Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa killed more than eleven thousand people.
