WAVES

WWII female sailors

Waves are disturbances that travel through a medium or space—ocean waves move through water, sound waves through air, light waves through electromagnetic fields.

The verb wave means to move something back and forth, typically the hand as a greeting or signal: She waved goodbye.

Hair can be wavy, falling in waves.

Figuratively, waves suggest successive surges: waves of immigrants, waves of nausea, a wave of enthusiasm.

To make waves is to cause disruption. (Capitalized WAVES was the U.S.

Navy's women's reserve in World War II.)
