stripe
Zebra's defining mark
A stripe is a long narrow band of color or texture contrasting with its surroundings: a shirt with blue and white stripes, the stripes on a zebra.
Stripes can indicate rank—military personnel wear stripes on their sleeves to show grade.
By extension, stripe means type or kind: politicians of every stripe.
The verb means to mark with stripes: The morning light striped the floor through the blinds.
To earn one's stripes is to prove oneself through experience.
