mill pond
Waterwheel's power source
A mill pond is a body of water created by damming a stream to power a water mill.
The pond stores water that can be released to turn the mill wheel.
Because mill ponds are sheltered and fed by small streams rather than open water, they're typically calm—hence the simile calm as a mill pond or smooth as a mill pond for glassy, undisturbed water.
