TCP

Reliable data delivery

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol, the fundamental communication protocol underlying most internet traffic.

TCP ensures reliable data delivery by breaking information into packets, tracking their order, and requesting retransmission of any that get lost.

It works alongside IP (Internet Protocol)—hence the common pairing "TCP/IP." When you load a webpage or send an email, TCP handles the connection: The server refused the TCP connection on port 80.
