keepalive
Network presence signal
A keepalive is a signal sent between devices to maintain an active connection, preventing automatic disconnection due to inactivity.
Network protocols, servers, and applications use keepalive messages to confirm the other end is still responsive: The firewall was dropping idle sessions, so we enabled TCP keepalive.
As an adjective, it describes anything serving this function: keepalive packets, keepalive interval.
