checksum

Error detection value

A checksum is a value computed from data to detect errors in transmission or storage.

The sending system calculates a number based on the data's contents; the receiving system recalculates it and compares.

If the checksums don't match, something went wrong: The file failed the checksum verification.

Checksums catch accidental corruption but aren't designed to prevent deliberate tampering—that requires cryptographic methods.
