datagram

Self-contained data unit

A datagram is a self-contained unit of data transmitted over a network, carrying its own addressing information so it can be routed independently.

Unlike connection-based protocols, datagrams travel without establishing a dedicated path—each packet finds its own way, and arrival order isn't guaranteed.

UDP sends datagrams without waiting for acknowledgment.

The term emphasizes the telegram-like independence of each message.
