Russia's northern metropolis
St Petersburg is a major Russian city on the Baltic Sea, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and serving as the imperial capital until 1918.
It was renamed Leningrad during the Soviet era before reverting to its original name in 1991.
The city is renowned for its European-influenced architecture, the Hermitage Museum, and its role in Russian literature and revolution.
St Petersburg is also a city in Florida, often called St Pete, known for its beaches and retirement communities.
