embankments
River flood defenses
Embankments are raised structures of earth, stone, or other materials built to hold back water, support a roadway or railway, or prevent flooding.
A river embankment keeps water contained within its channel; a railway embankment elevates tracks above the surrounding terrain.
The term always implies something constructed rather than naturally occurring, distinguishing embankments from hills or ridges.
The train crossed the valley on a long embankment.
