Saxons

Early English settlers

The Saxons were a Germanic people who originated in what is now northern Germany.

Some migrated to Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries, eventually merging with Angles and other groups to form the Anglo-Saxon population.

Saxon survives in place names: Wessex (West Saxons), Essex (East Saxons), Sussex (South Saxons).

In modern use, Saxon often distinguishes native English words from later borrowings: a good Saxon word like "house" rather than "residence".
