Normans

Medieval cross-Channel invaders

The Normans were the people of Normandy, a region in northern France settled by Vikings in the 10th century.

Within generations they adopted French language and culture while retaining a reputation for military prowess.

The Norman Conquest of 1066 brought them to England, where they reshaped the language, law, and aristocracy.

Norman also describes their distinctive Romanesque architecture: Norman arches, a Norman church.
