Dark Ages
Europe's lost centuries
The Dark Ages is a term for the early medieval period in Europe, roughly from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century to around the tenth century.
The name reflects the view that classical learning declined and few written records survived—though historians now consider this characterization oversimplified and increasingly avoid the term.
The manuscript somehow survived the Dark Ages. (Lowercase dark ages refers to any period of decline.)
