Aztecs

Ancient Mexican civilization

The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican people who dominated central Mexico from the 14th to 16th centuries, building their capital Tenochtitlan on the site of present-day Mexico City.

Their empire fell to Spanish conquistadors in 1521.

The term now refers to their descendants, their Nahuatl language, or their cultural legacy: Aztec pyramids, Aztec calendar, Aztec mythology.
