ethnic Germans

Teutonic heritage population

Ethnic Germans are people of German ancestry or cultural heritage, regardless of citizenship or current residence.

The term distinguishes ancestry from nationality—ethnic Germans may live in Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, or the Americas while retaining German language, customs, or identity.

Historically significant in discussions of World War II displacement and postwar migration: Millions of ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern Europe after 1945.
