Carolingian
Medieval Frankish ruling family
Carolingian refers to the Frankish dynasty that ruled much of Western Europe from the 8th to 10th centuries, or to the cultural and political revival associated with it.
Charlemagne was its most famous ruler.
The term applies to art, architecture, and manuscripts from this period: Carolingian minuscule, a standardized script, became the basis for modern lowercase letters.
The Carolingian Renaissance revived classical learning.
