West Germanic

Dutch's language family

West Germanic is a branch of the Germanic language family that includes English, German, Dutch, and Frisian, among others.

The term distinguishes these languages from North Germanic (Scandinavian languages) and the extinct East Germanic branch.

Most linguistic features English shares with German but not with Swedish trace back to their common West Germanic ancestry.
