Carolingian Empire
Frankish medieval superstate
The Carolingian Empire was the Frankish kingdom under Charlemagne and his descendants, spanning much of Western and Central Europe from the late 8th to late 9th century.
Charlemagne's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 800 marked its peak.
The empire fragmented after his death, its divisions prefiguring the boundaries of modern France and Germany.
