Wessex

Ancient English kingdom

Wessex was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom in southern England, one of the most powerful before England unified in the 10th century.

Today the name survives mainly through Thomas Hardy, who used Wessex as the fictional setting for his novels, mapping it onto the rural counties of southwestern England: Hardy's Wessex novels capture Victorian rural life.
